The best marketing automation software is the product that can explain why a person entered a journey, whether the organisation had permission to contact them, which evidence changed their status, and what sales received at the handoff.
That is more demanding than sending email. Marketing automation may include identity resolution, consent, segmentation, nurturing, scoring, channel delivery, sales handoff, attribution and customer-data history. The category also spans very different products: accessible email tools, ecommerce lifecycle platforms, data-driven messaging systems and enterprise business-to-business (B2B) suites.
This marketing automation software comparison covers all 15 products in the Week 17 research set. It does not declare one universal winner. It shows which operating model each platform fits, where its pricing can expand, and when the business should compare another subscription with owning a coherent marketing operation.
Best marketing automation software at a glance
| Product | Best fit | Distinguishing strength | Main buying caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| ActiveCampaign | Small and mid-sized organisations wanting deep automation without an enterprise-suite starting point | Flexible journeys, segmentation, predictive content and a broad integration ecosystem | Contact volume, edition and advanced features change the price; complex automations still require disciplined ownership |
| Brevo | Cost-conscious organisations sending email and messages across several channels | Send-volume pricing, accessible entry tiers and a wider marketing-and-sales platform | Advanced data, team, integration and governance needs move buyers towards the much higher Professional or Enterprise tiers |
| Campaign Monitor | Brands and agencies prioritising email design, campaigns and reusable client structures | Strong email production, templates, journeys and agency account controls | Subscriber duplication across lists can affect billing, while broader customer-data and orchestration needs may require other systems |
| Constant Contact | Small businesses, associations and event-led organisations that value guidance and ease of use | Accessible email, social and event tools with strong service options | Pricing scales with contacts and sends; sophisticated lifecycle orchestration is not its strongest lane |
| Customer.io | Product-led and digital businesses with event-rich customer data | Data-driven cross-channel journeys, objects, developer-friendly integration and unlimited users | Profile and message overages matter, while advanced support, governance and migration begin at materially higher tiers |
| HubSpot Marketing Hub | Growing organisations wanting inbound marketing, automation and customer records in one ecosystem | Broad campaign, content, CRM, reporting and automation surface with strong adoption resources | Marketing contacts, seats, onboarding, credits and adjacent hubs can make the apparent entry price a poor guide to total cost |
| Iterable | Enterprise consumer brands coordinating high-volume cross-channel engagement | Mature orchestration across email, SMS, push, in-app, web push and embedded messages | Pricing is quote-led, and value depends on strong data engineering, content operations and governance |
| Keap | Small businesses wanting CRM, follow-up, appointments, payments and marketing automation together | A coherent small-business revenue platform rather than an email tool alone | The platform starts well above lightweight email products, requires implementation services and grows with contacts and communication usage |
| Klaviyo | Ecommerce brands using behavioural and transaction data for lifecycle marketing | Deep commerce integrations, segmentation, flows, attribution and coordinated email and mobile messaging | Active-profile growth, add-ons and channel usage can make successful list growth commercially significant |
| Mailchimp | Small organisations and creators moving from newsletters into basic automation | Familiar campaign production, templates, audience tools and a broad small-business ecosystem | Stored contact definitions, send limits and tier jumps require attention; it is not automatically the cheapest option as the audience grows |
| Marketo Engage | B2B enterprises with complex demand generation, account programmes and CRM integration | Highly configurable programmes, scoring, routing, nurturing and enterprise extensibility | Quote-led database pricing, specialist administration and accumulated configuration can turn flexibility into technical debt |
| Omnisend | Ecommerce businesses wanting a more accessible email, SMS and push lifecycle platform | Commerce-focused automations, product personalisation and a generous functional entry point | Billable contacts include some non-subscribers, tiers adjust with the audience and SMS now requires Pro for new customers |
| Ortto | Software and subscription businesses wanting customer data, journeys and analytics together | Unified customer profiles, flexible journeys, reporting and product or revenue data connections | The starting price is above basic email tools, and contact, email, retention and add-on limits need a configured quote |
| Salesforce Marketing Cloud Account Engagement | Salesforce-centred B2B organisations aligning nurturing, scoring and opportunity reporting | Native connection to Salesforce records with B2B automation, analytics and increasingly agentic capabilities | Organisation pricing begins at an enterprise level; add-ons, Salesforce dependencies and administration materially affect cost |
| SharpSpring / Constant Contact Lead Gen & CRM | Agencies and organisations wanting CRM, lead tracking and marketing automation in one client-oriented platform | Agency controls, lead lifecycle visibility, email and CRM automation | The product now sits inside Constant Contact; current direct-client pricing is contract-specific and usage-based, so old SharpSpring price comparisons are unreliable |
The table becomes useful only after the buyer chooses a lane. Brevo and Constant Contact should not be judged as smaller versions of Marketo. Klaviyo and Omnisend solve commerce problems that a general B2B suite may handle awkwardly. Customer.io, Iterable and Ortto assume useful behavioural data already exists. HubSpot, Marketo and Salesforce Account Engagement can connect more of the B2B revenue operation, but demand correspondingly stronger administration and commercial scrutiny.
How we compared the marketing automation platforms
We reviewed current vendor product, documentation and pricing material on 19 September 2026. The comparison uses the work an organisation must operate after the demonstration:
- Identity and data: how people, accounts, objects, events and duplicate records are represented.
- Consent and suppression: whether purpose, channel, source, time, unsubscribe and do-not-contact state remain clear.
- Nurturing and orchestration: triggers, branches, versioning, approvals, channel coordination and recovery from failed actions.
- Qualification and handoff: scoring, account context, sales-readiness rules, routing, acknowledgement, rejection and recycling.
- Content and deliverability: templates, personalisation, testing, sender controls, frequency and delivery evidence.
- Measurement: campaign performance, journey analysis, attribution and the distinction between correlation and an authoritative sales outcome.
- AI authority: what AI may prepare or recommend, what it may execute, and what remains accountable human work.
- Integration and exit: application programming interfaces (APIs), webhooks, bulk import, complete export, migration and rollback.
- Commercial exposure: contacts, profiles, sends, users, database size, credits, add-ons, implementation and continuing administration.
We did not award points merely because a platform has more features or calls automation agentic. A buyer should make each finalist prove the same identity, consent, nurture, qualification, handoff and export journey with representative data.
Best marketing automation platform by buyer type
Best accessible automation for small organisations: ActiveCampaign, Brevo, Campaign Monitor and Constant Contact
These products cover different steps up from basic email.
- ActiveCampaign is the strongest automation-first option in this lane. It fits organisations prepared to design behavioural journeys and maintain their logic.
- Brevo is attractive when send volume matters more than stored-contact pricing and the business wants email, SMS and WhatsApp options without starting at enterprise cost.
- Campaign Monitor suits brands and agencies where controlled email production, templates and client structures matter more than a broad customer-data platform.
- Constant Contact is the approachable choice for smaller organisations that value events, service and guided campaign execution.
The decision should be based on the workflow you will actually maintain. A low starting price is irrelevant if the required automation, team controls, data integration or reporting sits several tiers higher.
Best ecommerce marketing automation: Klaviyo and Omnisend
Klaviyo is the deeper ecommerce choice when transaction, catalogue and behavioural data justify sophisticated segmentation, flows, personalisation and attribution. Omnisend covers many common commerce journeys with a more accessible entry point and strong email, push and mobile capability.
Both require a precise contact model. Omnisend counts subscribers and certain non-subscribers as billable contacts because they may participate in transactional or behavioural automation. Klaviyo bases email pricing on active profiles. Ask what a synced customer, guest checkout, suppressed profile, abandoned cart and historical purchaser will cost before connecting the complete store history.
Best data-driven customer journeys: Customer.io, Iterable and Ortto
Customer.io is a strong choice for product-led businesses whose developers can supply clean events and objects. Its public Essentials plan makes serious behavioural messaging accessible; Premium adds onboarding, integrations, managed deliverability and more governance.
Iterable is the enterprise option in this lane. It coordinates email, SMS, push, in-app, web push and embedded messages at scale, but expects mature data and content operations. Ortto is a useful middle ground for software and subscription businesses that want customer data, journeys, dashboards and revenue signals in one product.
These platforms do not repair poor event semantics by themselves. Define who owns each event, how retries and late arrivals behave, which identity wins, and how consent restricts activation before building journeys.
Best small-business revenue platform: Keap
Keap is the outlier because it combines customer relationship management (CRM), marketing automation, appointments, pipeline, invoicing and payments. That breadth can remove several handoffs for a small service business.
It also raises the replacement bar. A move away from Keap may involve customer history, campaigns, appointments, opportunities and payment handoffs rather than an email export. Compare its $2,988 annual starting subscription with the complete replacement operation, including the people and integrations needed to run it.
Best B2B marketing automation: HubSpot, Marketo and Salesforce Account Engagement
HubSpot is the broadest adoption-led choice. It connects inbound capture, content, campaigns, automation, customer records and reporting, with published starting prices and required onboarding for higher editions.
Marketo is the configurable enterprise specialist. Adobe documents programmes, engagement streams, lead and account records, scoring, routing, CRM integration and database-sized packaging. It can model complex demand operations, but that flexibility creates a continuing configuration and specialist-administration responsibility.
Salesforce Marketing Cloud Account Engagement—still widely searched for as Pardot—is the natural candidate when Salesforce is already the sales authority. Its published organisation pricing makes the enterprise commitment visible, while optional analytics, dynamic content and communication channels can expand the contract.
The Week 17 case study will test the Marketo boundary directly: can an organisation replace the configured platform with an owned marketing operation that preserves identity, consent, nurturing, qualification and accepted sales handoff without recreating unused enterprise breadth?
Best agency-oriented marketing and CRM platform: SharpSpring / Constant Contact Lead Gen & CRM
SharpSpring's current home matters. Constant Contact now documents Lead Gen & CRM direct-client billing by lead count, email sends and page impressions, with optional capabilities and account-specific service tiers. Buyers should evaluate the current product, agreement and support model rather than relying on an old SharpSpring list price.
Its combined CRM, tracking and automation surface remains useful for agencies. The purchasing test is whether one client-oriented platform simplifies delivery or whether the agency will still maintain separate identity, consent, content, reporting and sales records elsewhere.
What AI changes—and what it must not decide
AI now appears throughout this category. ActiveCampaign promotes AI-led journey execution. Customer.io includes an AI agent with execution skills. HubSpot meters agents and features through credits. Marketo now promotes an agentic interface and an MCP server. Omnisend exposes an MCP connection alongside campaign and segmentation assistance. Other vendors use AI for content, timing, segmentation, prediction or analytics.
Those labels describe different authority models. Evaluate them through one controlled demonstration:
| AI task | Useful behaviour | Boundary to require |
|---|---|---|
| Investigate a stalled or suspicious journey | Assemble relevant identity, consent, event, campaign and handoff records with citations | The model must not silently merge identities or dismiss conflicting evidence |
| Propose a segment or journey | Explain the rule, affected population, exclusions and uncertainty | A proposal must remain a versioned draft until an authorised person approves it |
| Draft content | Use approved claims, tone and source material for a named audience and purpose | Generated copy does not establish consent, legal approval or permission to send |
| Recommend qualification | Explain which fit and engagement evidence supports the recommendation | AI must not invent activity, choose the authoritative score or create a sales handoff by itself |
| Prepare a campaign report | Cite the exact campaign, audience, delivery and sales-outcome versions used | A generated narrative must not turn attribution into proven causation |
| Execute through chat or MCP | Show the typed command, scope, recipients and expected effect before confirmation | The authenticated human's permissions, idempotency, policy and audit checks still apply |
The question is not whether the product has AI. It is whether the organisation can inspect, constrain, correct and reverse what the AI does.
Consent, identity and deliverability are product architecture
A polished journey canvas can hide an unreliable marketing record. Before choosing a platform, test these cases:
- The same person arrives with a work address, a personal address and a CRM contact identifier.
- One source says the person opted in; another contains a later unsubscribe for a narrower purpose.
- A corporate security scanner clicks every link immediately after delivery.
- A form submission is retried and the same event arrives twice.
- A sales representative changes the account or lifecycle state while a nurture is running.
- A person qualifies, but the CRM rejects or times out during handoff.
- A late source event arrives after the journey and score have changed.
The product should preserve source, observed time, received time and decision history. It should separate duplicate delivery from identity matching, machine activity from human intent, consent from mere contactability, and a message accepted by a provider from a message delivered to a person.
This is also an exit test. Export the identities, source identifiers, consent and suppression history, journey membership, campaign versions, content references, delivery events, scores, handoffs and decision history. A CSV of current contacts is not a recoverable marketing operation.
What practitioners say after the demonstration
Forum discussions are anecdotes, not representative market research, but they expose useful procurement questions.
- In a Marketo-versus-HubSpot discussion, practitioners warned that Marketo's licence can be only part of the cost once specialist administration, implementation and parallel migration are included.
- A recent HubSpot pricing complaint described old imported records pushing an organisation into higher marketing-contact tiers. HubSpot's marketing-contacts billing documentation confirms that it does not downgrade contact tiers mid-term.
- In Klaviyo pricing discussions, some operators objected to profile-led price growth while others argued that strong ecommerce revenue continued to justify the platform. That disagreement is the useful point: cost should be judged against the journeys and revenue evidence the business actually uses.
The common failure is not simply “software is expensive”. It is paying for records, channels and automation that the organisation cannot connect to a trustworthy operating outcome.
Marketing automation software pricing assumptions
Marketing automation pricing uses incompatible units. Some vendors charge by stored contacts, marketing contacts or active profiles. Others use sends, users, database size, organisation licences, artificial-intelligence credits, channels or a negotiated combination. Implementation, migration, dedicated sending infrastructure, SMS, WhatsApp, data products, sandboxes, attribution and premium support can sit outside the displayed price.
All amounts below are USD and use public information observed on 19 September 2026. Promotional discounts are excluded where a stable standard price is available. Figures exclude tax and internal staff.
Public pricing signals
| Product | Public pricing evidence | What to model beyond the headline |
|---|---|---|
| ActiveCampaign | Packages start at $15 per month; price scales with contacts and features | Required edition, contacts, users, channels, AI usage, migration and advanced support |
| Brevo | Free to 300 emails per day; Starter starts at $9, Standard $18 and Professional $499 per month; Enterprise is custom | Monthly sends, users, landing pages, data capabilities, SMS/WhatsApp usage, dedicated IP and support |
| Campaign Monitor | Contact calculator across Lite, Essentials and Premier; Lite allows five times the subscriber count in monthly sends while higher tiers allow unlimited campaign and journey sends | Duplicate subscribers across lists, transactional volume, agency structures, testing and services |
| Constant Contact | Displayed entry prices are $12 Lite, $35 Standard and $80 Premium per month, varying with contacts and sends | Contact tier, send allowance, overages, SMS, events, services and migration |
| Customer.io | Essentials starts at $100 per month for 5,000 profiles and one million emails; Premium starts at $1,000 per month billed yearly | People and object profiles, overages, channels, premium integrations, governance, deliverability and migration support |
| HubSpot Marketing Hub | Starter begins at $10 per seat/month; Professional $890/month plus $3,000 onboarding; Enterprise $3,600/month plus $7,000 onboarding | Marketing-contact tier, core seats, email multiple, credits, add-ons, adjacent hubs and renewal rules |
| Iterable | No public list price for the configured enterprise service | Profiles, channels, send volume, data and catalogue use, implementation, deliverability and support |
| Keap | Starts at $299 monthly or $2,988 annually, with required implementation services | Included users and contacts, added contacts, messaging, payments, migration and services |
| Klaviyo | Free to 250 active profiles and 500 monthly emails; paid pricing uses the configured profile and channel calculator | Active profiles, email volume, SMS/RCS/WhatsApp, analytics, data platform, reviews, service and migration |
| Mailchimp | Free below 250 contacts; paid editions and contact tiers use the live calculator, with Premium displayed from $350/month for the selected 10,000-contact example | Stored subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts, sends, SMS, overages, onboarding and add-ons |
| Marketo Engage | Growth, Select, Prime and Ultimate are quote-led and priced by database size | Users, database, API quota, workspaces, sandbox, attribution, AI, implementation, migration and specialist administration |
| Omnisend | Free to 250 contacts and 500 emails; Standard starts at $16 and Pro at $59 per month | Billable contacts, send multiple, SMS, add-ons, account expert threshold and audience growth |
| Ortto | Starter is $199 per month, with savings advertised for annual payment | Contacts, email volume, data retention, SMS numbers and credits, custom IPs, storage, Talk seats and support |
| Salesforce Account Engagement | Growth+ $1,250, Plus+ $2,750, Advanced+ $4,400 and Premium+ $15,000 per organisation/month, billed annually | Salesforce editions, contacts, business units, analytics, dynamic content, channels, success plan and implementation |
| SharpSpring / Constant Contact Lead Gen & CRM | Direct-client tiers are contract-specific and based on peak stored leads, sends and page impressions | Salesforce integration, mailbox sync, overages, client licences, implementation and current contract terms |
Public entry prices are useful, but they do not make the products equivalent. Brevo Standard and Salesforce Account Engagement Growth+ solve different operating problems even though both appear in the same category.
One-, three- and five-year cost range by business size
The following ranges are SwarmCraft procurement assumptions, not vendor quotes or market averages. They are designed to make the cost model discussable before a shortlist is configured:
- Small programme: 5,000 marketable people, three operators, 50,000 monthly emails, one principal nurture and standard support. Assumed annual platform cost: $600–$12,000; initial implementation and migration: $0–$6,000.
- Growing operation: 25,000 marketable people, 10 operators, 250,000 monthly emails, several journeys, CRM integration, consent migration and reporting. Assumed annual platform cost: $6,000–$60,000; initial implementation and migration: $5,000–$40,000.
- Enterprise estate: 100,000 marketable people, 25 operators, one million monthly messages, several channels and business units, single sign-on, sandbox, attribution, governed AI and complex migration. Assumed annual platform cost: $30,000–$250,000; initial implementation and migration: $50,000–$300,000.
Implementation is counted once in year one. The model holds subscription prices and audience sizes flat, excludes internal staff, content production, media, tax and financing, and does not assume a discount. A configured quote can sit outside these ranges.
| Business size and operating shape | 1 year | 3 years | 5 years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small marketing programme | $600–$18,000 | $1,800–$42,000 | $3,000–$66,000 |
| Growing marketing operation | $11,000–$100,000 | $23,000–$220,000 | $35,000–$340,000 |
| Enterprise marketing estate | $80,000–$550,000 | $140,000–$1.05 million | $200,000–$1.55 million |
These ranges deliberately widen with operating complexity. Five-year exposure is not only a licence calculation: it includes the commercial consequence of audience growth and the initial work required to migrate a trustworthy operation. Ask every finalist for a five-year schedule covering contacts, sends, users, credits, channels, implementation, data retention, deliverability, support, renewal limits, export and termination assistance.
Best marketing automation software for small business
Small businesses should begin with the job, not the category. Brevo, Constant Contact and Mailchimp are credible starting points for contact capture, campaigns and simpler automation. ActiveCampaign is stronger when behavioural journeys are central. Omnisend or Klaviyo makes more sense when ecommerce events and repeat-purchase behaviour drive the work. Keap is worth its higher starting price when the business genuinely benefits from joining CRM, appointments, follow-up and payments.
Do not buy an enterprise platform to gain one lead-nurture sequence. Compare the actual contact count, send frequency, number of journeys, channels, integrations and reporting requirements. Then test how easily the business can recover consent and journey history if it leaves.
Best marketing automation software in Australia
Australian buyers should test operational fit rather than treating an Australian office or local currency as sufficient evidence. Confirm contracted hosting, subprocessors, support hours, sender infrastructure, SMS availability and pricing, tax treatment, breach processes, export and the organisation's obligations under privacy, spam and sector-specific rules.
Brevo, Campaign Monitor, Constant Contact, Customer.io, HubSpot, Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend and Ortto can all be plausible smaller or mid-market candidates depending on the workflow. Enterprise buyers should make Adobe, Salesforce and Iterable demonstrate the exact regional service and data path that will appear in the agreement.
The marketing operation the organisation must control
Whether the software is purchased or built, the organisation should be able to control and recover:
- prospect and account identifiers, source provenance and reviewed merges
- consent, purpose, channel, preference, unsubscribe and suppression history
- source events with observed time, received time, replay and machine-activity classification
- audiences, segments, exclusions and the rules or versions that produced them
- nurture programmes, journey versions, campaign approvals and content references
- message requests, provider responses, delivery evidence, failures and reconciliation
- fit and engagement criteria, score versions and qualification decisions
- sales handoff payloads, acknowledgement, rejection, recycling and outcome references
- AI proposals, citations, confirmations, executions and audit evidence
- exports, migration mappings, quarantined records, cutover and rollback history
That does not require the marketing platform to own everything. The CRM may remain authoritative for opportunities and sales activity. Commerce owns orders and refunds. Identity, billing, content, advertising and delivery providers retain the specialist facts deliberately left outside the operation. The marketing system must preserve how those facts were used without becoming an unreliable copy of them.
Final recommendation
Choose by operating shape:
- Shortlist ActiveCampaign, Brevo, Campaign Monitor or Constant Contact for accessible small and mid-sized automation, then verify the tier that contains the workflows and controls you need.
- Shortlist Klaviyo or Omnisend when ecommerce behaviour, catalogue data and repeat-purchase journeys dominate.
- Shortlist Customer.io, Iterable or Ortto when clean product and customer events drive cross-channel lifecycle work.
- Choose Keap when one small-business revenue platform can genuinely replace separate CRM, follow-up, appointment and payment handoffs.
- Shortlist HubSpot, Marketo or Salesforce Account Engagement for B2B demand generation, while pricing the specialist administration, CRM dependency and complete migration—not only the subscription.
- Evaluate SharpSpring / Constant Contact Lead Gen & CRM as the current agency-oriented product and contract, not from a historical SharpSpring review.
Then make every finalist prove one complete journey: identity resolution, consent, human-versus-machine engagement, nurture, qualification, accepted CRM handoff and complete export. If the organisation needs one coherent nurture-and-handoff operation while every proposal expands into a platform programme, compare the suite with owning that operation directly.
Continue with Why marketing stacks bloat around nurturing and campaign handoffs for the duplication and cost story. The Friday case study, Lead Nurturing Workflow: how to automate it, will replace Marketo with an owned path from consent to accepted sales handoff.
Choose a discovery route
A bounded campaign approval or nurture step with a clear retained system may suit Fast Start. Replacing a marketing platform requires identity, consent, customer history, delivery, integrations, migration, reconciliation and continuity to be investigated together. Choose the appropriate discovery route before deciding what the organisation should keep, integrate, migrate or own.
